Northern Illinois University is seeking a Naming Rights Partner for the NIU Convocation Center, its 10,000-seat multipurpose arena that is home to the Huskies men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs, among others, and annually welcomes nearly 215,000 visitors from throughout the region and beyond, NIU Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Sean T. Frazier announced Monday.
Frazier’s announcement came as the official Request for Proposal (RFP) for potential partners was posted to the State Procurement website.
“I’m excited that the process we started several months ago has reached the point where we can now move forward with the public posting of the RFP,” Frazier said. “This is an important step as we look to maximize the potential revenue generation for NIU Athletics and the university, while following all state of Illinois policies and procedures.”
The Convocation Center, a $36 million facility completed in 2002, is easily accessible and from some of Illinois’ busiest routes, which combined accommodate approximately 21.5 million vehicles per year. More than 775,000 people live within a 30-minute drive of the Convocation Center, providing potential partners with significant promotional, name and brand recognition across the region.
“Over the last year, we have had multiple inquiries and discussions with respect to the Convocation Center and naming rights, and feel confident we will have great interest from not only local, but regional and national brands,” Frazier said. “The Convo is a crown jewel in DeKalb County and in NIU Athletics’ footprint, and through the naming rights partner, we want to take advantage of its reach and visibility.”
In addition to Huskie sports and university events, including commencement and job/career fairs, the Convocation Center has hosted popular concerts, trade shows, community activities, dog shows, high school graduations, cheer competitions and more, cutting across a wide range of attractive demographic groups.
