Northern Illinois University men’s basketball head coach Mark Montgomery announced on Monday that Marlo Brown and Safir Daow have signed a National Letters of Intent to join the Huskie basketball program for the 2017-18 season.

The 6-foot-5 Daow, who was born in South Sudan, makes his home in Melbourne, Australia, but has attended Victory Rock Prep in Sarasota, Fla., for the past three years. This past season, Daow averaged 12.7 points, 4.2 assists and 3.8 rebounds per game while helping Victory Rock to a 27-8 record and a state runner-up finish in the Sunshine Independent Athletic Association. In 2015-16, Daow helped Victory Rock with the Grind Session Prep National Championship in Phoenix, Ariz.

“We are very happy to welcome Safir to the NIU basketball family,” said Montgomery. “Safir is a versatile player who possesses good quickness, athleticism, and toughness. Those traits will help him make a positive impact on our program. He is a combo guard who comes from a school that has produced a number of Division 1 players and we are excited that he is a Huskie.”

Brown was a four-year starter at Southfield (Mich.) Christian before spending a postgraduate year at DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Fla. At Southfield Christian, Brown helped the Eagles win a pair of state championships while scoring 1,630 career points with 1,193 career rebounds, the fifth-best rebounding total in state history.

As a senior in 2015-16, Brown earned Michigan Class C First Team All-State honors from the Associated Press, the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan and the Detroit News. Last year at DME Academy, Brown averaged 15.3 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.

“We are also very pleased to add Marlo to our program,” said Montgomery. “Marlo is a 6-foot-5, athletic wing who has a winning pedigree, having won a pair of state championships in high school. He is another versatile piece that can score, can rebound and will impact a game in a variety of ways, and we look forward to having him join our program.”

Brown and Daow join Owen Hamilton (Prescott, Wis./Prescott) and Tommy Demogerontas (Orland Park, Ill./Moraine Valley Community College), who signed in November, along with Rod Henry-Hayes (Zion, Ill./Zion-Benton Township), who signed earlier in April, as the fourth and fifth incoming Huskies for the 2017-18 season.
