Opening the football season on the road is never easy. It’ll be even more challenging Saturday for the NIU Huskies.
They’ll kick things off in Laramie, Wyoming against the University of Wyoming Cowboys.
War Memorial Stadium in Laramie is the highest stadium in the nation in major college football. It sits 7,220 feet above sea level. Compare that to the Denver Broncos Sports Authority Field at Mile High. That sits 5,280 feet above sea level.
So is that altitude and lack of oxygen a concern for the Huskies?
“As a team we’re not worried about it,” says NIU offensive tackle Levon Myers. “Yea we’ve heard a lot about, you know, highest stadium in the country and all that, but we’re preparing the same way. We’re doing a little extra conditioning after practice, but we know that if we just stay hydrated and take care of our job the altitude is not going to be a factor.”
This will be the first meeting ever in football between the Huskies and the Cowboys. The game will kickoff at 9:30 p.m. Central Time Saturday. It will be shown on CBSSportsNetwork.
