The Huskies certainly had some help getting into the MAC Championship, but you won’t hear any apologies out of DeKalb for the way things unfolded.
NIU lost to Ohio last Tuesday meaning their fate was no longer in their own hands. They needed Western Michigan to defeated Toledo on Saturday and that’s exactly what happened. So the Huskies, one of four teams with a 6-2 record in the MAC West, claimed the West Championship and a trip to Detroit.
NIU coach Rod Carey says the Huskies earned that trip.
“Everyone wants to talk about how we got in and all that stuff. As I’m sitting here I’m pretty sure we’re MAC West champions and we’re in the game,: says Carey. “Whether you lose your first two or your first one and your last one like we did, we won the MAC West and we’re in.”
The Huskies will play Bowling Green in the MAC Championship game Friday night.
