The topic of concussions in racing became a hot one during media day Wednesday at Daytona. Danica Patrick fueled some of that by claiming she probably has suffered at least 12 concussions during her career.
She was asked about concussions because Dale Earnhardt Jr. is making his return from a severa concussion that forced him to sit out the second half of last season.
“You know when he said something about having 12 concussions I was like, ‘Oh I’m sure I’ve had 12 concussions.’ I think that we all like to sweep it under the rug as drivers like we feel fine. Nothing’s wrong, but it’s our life.”
Patrick went on to say that she wouldn’t risk her health and her future if medical experts told her that another concussion could create a major problem for her.
“If there was someone that told m, or I would hope any other driver, ‘If you have another wreck you could have a serious problem,’ they would be out. Like I would be out, because I love what I do, but I love lots of other things and I also love life, and I’m too young to have it be over.”
Patrick is 34 years old. She was involved in several crashes last year, but even all of the safety measures taken by NASCAR can’t prevent head trauma all the time.
