Rock Valley Brings Home Their Championship Hardware

The Rock Valley women’s basketball team arrived home in style on Sunday. The Golden Eagles received a police escort after winning their fourth national championship in six years.

The champs were welcomed back by friends and family at the Physical Education Center at Rock Valley College. The Golden Eagles finished the year with a record 33-2.

“These kids responded,” says Rock Valley coach Misty Opat. “I mean they responded all year long, and I can’t say enough when a team is 33-2. You know it’s just unbelievable.”

Sophomore’s Jaycee Cleaver, Tierra McGowan, and Chrisseesha Clark were filled with emotions. They really wanted to win the national title after falling short as freshman.

“During the week it went pretty slow, but now that we’re home it went by so fast,” says Cleaver. “I mean I wouldn’t have wanted to win it with any other team.”

“This group it built a lot of energy for us,” says tournament most valuable player McGowan. “Especially for us to work as a team. It was pretty good.”

“I feel like we just did what [Coach Opat] wanted us to do even though we started off bad,” says Clark. “Good teams find a way to win.”
