Rock Valley College says ‘Good-bye’ and ‘Thank you’ to Opat

There were a lot of hugs and some misty eyes at the Rock Valley College Student Center Atrium Thursday afternoon. Staff members, athletes and friends turned out for an open house to say good-bye to athletic director and head women’s basketball coach Misty Opat.

Opat accepted a job at Chicago State earlier this week to become the women’s head basketball coach at that school. At Rock Valley Opat guided the Golden Eagles to four NJCAA D-3 national championships and two national runnerup finishes in nine seasons. As athletic director she oversaw a program that won 13 national championships in five different sports.

I interviewed Opat at the open house to capture her feelings on RVC, her thoughts on the challenge of Chicago State and her impressions of Chicago State athletic director Chris Zorich (the former Chicago Bear), plus her thoughts on recruiting players from the Rockford area.
