National Championship celebrations have become an annual event at Rock Valley College thanks to the women’s softball team. Another celebration was held Tuesday afternoon at RVC.
A couple weeks ago the Golden Eagles won the NJCAA Division III National Championship for the sixth straight year in Rochester, Minnesota. All six championship trophies were on display at the celebration at the Student Center Atrium where a good crowd turned out to hear head coach Darin Monroe speak.
RVC’s sixth straight championship is a national junior college record for all levels of NJCAA play, so these girls have continued RVC’s amazing softball legacy.
“It feels really good because we’re continuing a tradition that started before I even got here, and I’m hoping we set a good role model for the now sophomores to continue it for the next class that comes in as well,” said RVC sophomore Abby Ponder a graduate of Pecatonica High School.
“This one meant a lot just because of what we were playing for our hashtag of six plus one and the opportunity for us to seal the deal and we wrote history,” said Monroe.
Illinois State Senator Steve Stadelman also spoke at the celebration. He read an Illinois Senate statement of congratulations to the team for its record accomplishment.
