Rock Valley College’s women’s basketball team won’t have to leave the nest when they compete for another National Championship in two weeks. This year’s NJCAA D3 Women’s Basketball National Championship Tournament is hosted by none other than Rock Valley.
The Golden Eagles rocked Columbus State Community College 92-53 to win the District B Championship at Rock Valley’s Physical Education Center Saturday afternoon. Now the team’s quest win back-to-back National Championships will take place on their home floor.
“It’s really special,” says Rock Valley freshman and former Boylan standout Jessie Schrio. “Not only do we get to home court advantage, but this is the court that we grind it out on every single day like that is so so so special.”
Two other local basketball players set the tone in RVC’s win over Columbus State. Madison Vicencio (Harlem) finished with 22 points, and 10 rebounds. Madi Hecox (Rockford East) added 22 points, and 8 rebounds of her own.
“We did struggle in the beginning [of the season], but we kind of worked together as a team,” says Hecox. “Now being able to host it here in Rockford is awesome.”
“It’s super exciting, especially to be home,” says Vicencio. “There was a lot of people here today so I’m looking forward to see how booked nationals is.”
Rock Valley had been trying for years to host the National Tournament, and the chance to actually win it on their home floor would be an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
“To be able to have the opportunity to have our team in it the first time ever that we’ve hosted it, and the opportunity to bring home a National Championship right here on our home court would just be amazing,” says Rock Valley’s athletic director and women’s head coach Misty Opat.
The National Tournament will begin Thursday, March 15-17 at Rock Valley’s Physical Education Center.
