Rockford celebrates 30th anniversary of Kenny Gould’s Olympic appearance

Sports

If you were around Rockford 30 years ago you know that Kenny Gould was a big deal then. 1988 was the year that he won a bronze medal in boxing in the Olympics.

Friday night Gould was all decked out in a slick red suit at Cliffbreakers. He was recognized at an event that was called ‘Cheers To 30 Years.’ Gould mingled with friends. He posed for pictures. He signed autographs and he told stories about the good old days in the ring. There will be a lot more of that going on next month when he flies to Las Vegas for a 30 year reunion with his former Olympic boxing teammates.

Gould was clearly enjoying himself Friday evening. “Everybody’s coming through kicking it with the home boys and having good times and celebrating and toasting and having a good time
!”

It’s hard to believe 30 years have flown by since his Olympic appearance..even for Gould.

“Oh my God I’ve been meditating about it myself and you see the age. You see the gray,” he chuckles stroking his short beard.

Rockford’s current boxing champion, Angel Martinez was also at the event Friday to honor Gould.
