Rockford native Jake Smolinski makes Oakland A’s opening day roster.

Rockford native and Boylan graduate Jake Smolinksi has made the Oakland A’s opening day roster.

Smolinski will be the A’s fourth outfielder playing behind and platooning with Boog Powell, Matt Joyce and Stephen Piscotty. Smolinski beat out Mark Canha for the final outfield spot.

In 21 games and 49 at bats this spring Smolinski hit .265 with four homers and 13 RBI. He also stole one base. Smolinski was limited to only 16 games last season after having shoulder surgery in March. In 2016 Smolinski played in 99 games. He batted .238 with seven homers and 27 RBI. Smolinski is 29 years old.

The A’s open their season Thursday afternoon (1:00 PDT), March 29 by hosting the Texas Rangers.
