MMA and kickboxing are still very much alive in Rockford. The two sports will be on full display this Saturday evening when the Rocktown Showdown 32 will be held at Giovanni’s.
Local fighters on the card include Sam Medina-Conchi of Roscoe and former Harlem and NIU wrestling standout Derek Elmore. He’ll be fighting for the Bantamweight MMA title. Elmore is fairly new to the sport. He won his first fight last fall.
“I like it a lot,” says Elmore. “When I was done wrestling up at NIU I took about a year and a half, two years off. I just miss working for something. I love competiting. I love trying to be the best I can be!”
“There’s a feeling to it that not many people understand,” says Medina-Conchi of MMA. “Many people think it’s barbaric to fight and it’s completely opposite. It’s just, there’s peace in there sometimes, so that’s what I love about it, peace of mind.”
Chand Tubio Seth Swinehart, Kane Cunningham, JR Roberts, Eli Roberts, Michael Parker, Danny Bazarek and Datrelle Kozeluh are the other fighters on the card Saturday night.
The doors will open at 6 p.m. The fights will begin at 7 p.m.
