Scott’s Sports Oscars

In the spirit of Oscar season here’s my spin with my local sports Oscars.

Let’s begin with the best sequel. That goes to the Dakota wrestling team for four-peating as state champions. They’re entering ‘Rocky’ and ‘Harry Potter’ territory with all of these consecutive hits.

My Oscar for the most improved local sports team goes to the NIU men’s basketball team. After years of slogging near the bottom of the MAC the Huskies have risen up and won 19 games already this season. That’s the fourth most wins in school history and they’re not finished.

My Oscar for the most unique sports name goes to Rockford’s new baseball team the Rivets. That award was a slam dunk.

My Oscar for the top leading lady for the past year is golfer Madasyn Pettersen. As a sophomore at Auburn last fall she won the IHSA state championship. Even more impressive last summer she was the youngest golfer ever to win the Illinois Women’s Open.

MY Oscar for the leading man is Lutheran running back James Robinson. He set the state’s all-time rushing record, and he led the Crusaders to one of the most dominant regular seasons a high school football team has ever had anywhere.

The Oscar for the top girls team goes to the Byron Lady Tigers who this past weekend won the school’s first state championship in that sport. They were never challenged in tournament play until they got to state and even then they were control when it counted.

The Oscar for the top boys team goes to the Rockford Christian baseball team which also won a state championship last June. The Royal Lions won 36 games behind a dominant pitching staff, and they were convincing winners in the championship game against Williamsville.
