A Machesney Park boxer is hoping this coming Saturday night will be the time he breaks into the win column as a professional.
Guastavo Rodriguez will step into the ring in Davenport, Iowa for a super-welterweight bout. His fight will be part of a card that will be held at the Col Ballroom. They’re begin put on by Rockford promoter Skylar Thompson.
Rodriguez was a highly successful MMA fighter and Muay Thai competitor for many years before making the switch to boxing. He’s winless in four bouts so far, but he believes he’s on the verge of a breakthrough.
“Yea I have four losses, but the four losses I have aren’t against cream puffs by any means,” says Rodriguez. “Two of the first guys I fought, actually three of the first guys I fought had really impressive amateur backgrounds. Two of them were already undefeated pros to begin with. So I’ve fought nothing but strong guys right off the bat.”
“He knows how to do it,” says Thompson. “It’s just he had a few tough fights, a few of them he should have won, but he was in somebody else’s hometown so it got taken from him.”
Other fighters slated to appear at the event include David Diaz, Adan Ortiz, Akeem Black, Gilbert Venegas Sr., and Gilbert Venegas Junior.
The doors will open at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. The first bout will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 for general admission, $40 for ringside and $500 for a V.I.P. Table.
The Col Ballroom is located at 1012 West 4th Street in Davenport. For more information call (563) 322-4431.
