BYRON, Ill.- (WTVO/WQRF) — The Stillman Valley at Byron football game Friday night will be more than a football game between great rivals. It’ll be an opportunity for fans to give to a great cause.

That game has been designated by the IHSFCA (Illinois High School Football Coaches Association) as a fundraiser for Shriners Hospitals for Children. The cheerleaders and some younger football players will be taking donations during the varsity game Friday evening.

Shriners Hospitals for Children is a health care system of 22 hospitals dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing pediatric specialty care, innovative research, and outstanding teaching programs for medical professionals. Children up to age 18 with orthopedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay.

In 2015 and 2016 the IHSFCA, spearheaded by Geneseo head coach Larry Johnsen Jr., solicited donations during the season that were donated to the Shriner’s Hospitals in the name of John and Judy Elder and presented at the Shrine Game. This was in appreciation of all that the Elders had done for Illinois High School Football, the IHSFCA and the yearly Shrine All-Star Football game.

The IHSFCA has made this an annual event in the hopes of continuing to honor the
Elders as well as provide additional donations to the Shrine Hospitals. Schools across the state are invited to participate in this great cause. We have chosen the Byron vs. Stillman Valley game for this.

“Byron and Stillman have always been great football towns. Our teams have always received great support from parents, fans, and many others. It is our civic duty to give back when we have the opportunity. Let’s enjoy this great rivalry, but also use this game as a platform to raise money for the children of the Shriner’s Hospital,” said Stillman Valley and Byron head coaches Mike lalor and Jeff Boyer in a press release.

Cash donations or checks will be accepted at the game. Checks should be made payable to IHSFCA. The IHSFCA will compile all the donations and present the check at the 2020 Shrine All-Star game in John and Judy Elders name.
