ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The Boylan Titans played in the mud bowl that was Titan Stadium in the playoffs last Saturday. That won’t be the case this coming Saturday.
They’ll play on the artificial turf field at Chicago St. Rita in the Class 5A semifinals. So Tuesday the Titans practiced on the turf at Wedgbury Stadium by the Indoor Sports Center in Loves Park. Typically soccer games are played on that field.
The Titans couldn’t have practiced on their normal practice field at Boylan or at Titan Stadium even if they wanted to because both fields are in bad shape due to the muddy conditions.
The Titans have played two games on turf this season. The last one was just over a month ago in Freeport. So they took the opportunity to get used to it again.
“I know that we’re playing outside this week and playing on turf. I thought it would be better for us. We acclimatized ourselves to all the muddy conditions up to this point. We’re going to play on turf, so we’d like to take a swing at acclimatizing ourselves to the outdoor weather and the quality surface,” said Boylan coach John Cacciatore.
“You take a look at our practice field out back (behind Boylan high school) and it’s just like our (game) field was during the game,” said quarterback John Starck. “We thought, it would be more productive to be on the turf especially if we’re going to be playing on turf this weekend, so I’m thankful for the ISC for letting us use it.”
Boylan’s game at St. Rita Saturday will kickoff at 2: 30 p.m.
