Reghan Brands and Asa Taylor are two Belvidere teenagers who spend their afternoons at the Gymnastics Academy of Rockford. This week they’ll be spending their time in Denmark competing at the World Tumbling Championships.
Brands placed third at Nationals in October. She’ll be making here third straight appearance at Worlds. she made it to the finals as one of the top eight tumblers last year. She says the international judges can be tough to please.
“You want every little thing to be perfect. Like My first year I missed finals by two-tenths, and that was from my round-off. My toe was flexed or something, and that put me out of the finals,” says Brand. “You never now what they’re looking for. One judge could prefer something over the other and judge that higher.”
Taylor will be making his first trip to the World Championships. He didn’t go last year because he was recovering from a broken neck that he suffered in practice a year and a half ago. He intends to make sure everyone knows who he is this first time.
I want to medal. Be on the podium. Get up there and let them know I’m here,” says Taylor. “First year. I’ve been out the past few, so a new experience.”
