Fred Van Vleet has cleared his first hurdle in the NCAA Tournament. He helped Wichita State defeat Vanderbilt in the First Four game Tuesday night 70-50.

Van Vleet finished the game with 14 points, seven assists, three rebounds, two steals and one cut on his forehead. That happened early in the game and sent him to the bench briefly for treatment.

The game was actually a tight one for the better part of 30 minutes. But the Shockers closed it out with a 20-2 run.

Ron Baker also scored 14 points and the Shockers out rebounded the taller Commodores 43-38.

Next up for the Shockers will be a game against Arizona Thursday in Providence.
