Winnebago’s Smith leads local qualifiers for State golf

(WTVO/WQRF) — Winnebago senior Marcus Smith leads a pack of local golfers who have qualified for the IHSA State Golf Tournaments this weekend.

Smith shot a 69 at Park Hills West in Freeport Monday to earn medalist honors in the 1A Freeport Aquin Sectional. He birdied the par 5 first hole and never looked back. Smith finished 7 strokes ahead of the next best golfer.

Also qualifying for State out of Freeport were Rockford Christian senior Owen Hultman (79) and Rockford Lutheran junior Andrew Gravino (82).

At the boys 2A Burlington Central Sectional Boylan qualified for state by finishing second as a team. The Titans 310 total was two strokes behind Crystal Lake South.

Senior TJ Baker led the Titans with a 73. Freshman Cooper Watt and Sophomore Nolan Brauns were next with 77s.

At the girls 2A Mt. Prospect Sectional Guilford’s Katelyn Sayyalinh of the Rockford Coop team qualified for State as an individual by shooting a 73. Also qualifying for State were junior Brighton Young of Harlem (78) and senior Allison Yohanan of DeKalb (79).

At the girls 1A Oregon Sectional Dixon qualified for State as a team by finishing in third place. Boylan freshman Ella Greenberg (77), Rochelle junior Megan Thiravong (81), Lutheran senior Brooke Bunjes (83) and Rockford Christian sophomore Emily Kneller (84) qualified for state as individuals.
