Winnebago County Animal Services lowers adoption fees to $25

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Winnebago County Animal Services is slashing adoption fees in order to clear its kennels to make way for some long-overdue renovations.

The shelter says the current cages used for housing animals can cause stress in larger canines.

“You want them to be comfortable in the cage because they spend a lot of time in the cage,” said Donna Apgar, Adoption Coordinator.

Deanna Torres is hoping to provide a “forever home” for one of the dogs at the shelter. “These poor dogs are homeless. They don’t have homes. They are brought in to the center. It’s scary for them.”

Torres is one of the many people who are helping to clear the shelter by adopting some of the animals within.

The shelter, located at 4517 North Main Street, will be knocking down walls to make room for larger cages, to give the dogs more space.

“It gives them more room to move around,” said Apgar. “It also gives them more room if they have to go to the bathroom. They can go to the bathroom in a different part of the cage, instead of right where their food and blankets are.”

The new upgrades won’t allow the shelter to house as many dogs as before, and that’s why the shelter is cutting its adoption fees, in hopes of encouraging residents to adopt dogs that have been at the shelter for a while.

“Before you pay those $500 – or less, or more – take into consideration the poor little guys that are here,” Torres said. “They have pure breeds, they have mixed breeds, they have little dogs, they have humongous dogs. Take out a few minutes of your time to at least give them that time and consideration.”

Apgar agrees. “It’s really pretty simple. Our normal adoption fee is $110, and that includes the spay and neutering, the microchip, [that] the dogs are current with their vaccinations and they’re heartworm tested, so that’s all included, at [the temporary price of $25]. One hundred dollars was a deal. Twenty-five is an enormous deal.”

The renovation is completely paid for by adoptions, and the special runs through this Saturday, June 15.
