ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) – One person is dead after a car hits a pedestrian on North Alpine Thursday morning.
Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz identified the victim as 44-year-old Tammy Shaw, of Rockford.
Investigators say Shaw was struck by a mini-van near the entrance to Edgebrook Center just before 10 a.m. Thursday morning. Police shutdown North Alpine, between Highcrest and Pinecrest, for several hours while
Police have not said what led up to the crash. The 60-year-old male driver of the mini-van did stay on scene. He was not hurt.
There have been a few bad accidents in the area the past few years.
“I don’t think I would call it dangerous,” said Rockford resident Barbara. “There is a lot of speeders at times.”
Kathy Schalow works at the nearby Mount Olive Lutheran Church and says a bicyclist was hit in this same area a few years ago.
“At the corner, by the entrance of the church same entrance area,” said Schalow.
Neighbors hope the city finds a way to make drivers slow down through the busy area
“To really address it as a serious problem, maybe there are some people that just take life so lightly, that they don’t even care but i don’t think that’s good,” said Rockford resident Kathee Thumm.
Nearby residents say it’s sad to see another local family grieving the loss of someone they love.
“So sorry they have to go through this hard time right now,” said Schalow. “I totally, totally get how they’re feeling after having lost a loved one myself recently, so probably not exactly how they feel but I definitely feel for them.”
