The 6th annual USA Track and Field Rockford F.I.R.E. Indoor Invitational was held at Auburn High School in Rockford on Saturday. Hosted by the Rockford Park District's Youth Sports Department, an estimated 600 athletes ages five through 18 from all across the country participated in the meet. The event included everything from the 4x400 relay, to shot put and high jump. Rockford F.I.R.E. Athletic Coordinator Marshalee Gordon says their athletes enjoy the competition.
"For us it's just exposing our athletes from the Rockford F.I.R.E. team to a high level of competition, as well as bringing visitors to the Rockford region and just exposing us and just showing the great things that we have to offer here in Rockford," Gordon said.
16-year-old athlete Larry Job traveled from Northeast Missouri to compete in the meet. He says despite not being part of a team, everyone was more than welcoming.
"The coaches, they're all very accepting," Job said. "Really good competition. These guys are so friendly. Very good people to compete with. I love it."
