Quickly Rising Rivers Following Heavy Rainfall Tuesday

Flood Warnings and Flood Advisories are currently in place for the Pecatonica, Rock and Kishwaukee Rivers ‘until further notice’ across northern Illinois. Following the heavy rain Tuesday night, river levels experienced a rapid increase, pushing stages into minor to moderate flood stage.

Additional rainfall Wednesday evening will only slow how quickly rivers recede, and delay when the rivers will crest. Right now the Pecatonica River at both Freeport and Shirland is in moderate flood stage, forecast to crest early next week. The river will rise, but is forecast to remain in moderate flood stage.

The Rock River from Rockton to Latham Park is in minor flood stage, forecast to rise into moderate flood stage either late Wednesday night or Thursday afternoon. The Rock River at Byron and Dixon are in action stage, forecast to rise into minor flood stage by Thursday afternoon. Any additional rainfall this week and weekend will keep rivers high with ongoing river flooding into next week.
